I watched this video and then went to the range. The complexity of backswing arm/wrist action was just wiped away through thinking about it like shown on the video. Even to the point where I just simultaneously lifted the arms and made the should turn (might look like coming outside-inside), I could get a lot more consistent wrist action and cleaner impacts and longer shots. So the information given here is, I think, the simplest way of explaining arm and wrist action during a golf swing!
I went out to the range and gave this a try. My results were fantastic! I made a better shoulder turn, and my impact was greatly improved.

So true…….if magazines and instructors would label each tip/lesson as being for 1 or 2 plane, upright or flat swing, the golf world would be a better place.
Fine and good, but do not become disconnected, or separate the upper arm from the chest. For many this info will be golf swing kryptonite. Masses of golfers lifting their arms away from their bodies, then wondering why they hit the ball like sht. So sure, swing the arms up, but keep it on the chest.
The best advice I ever heard was this: “Amateurs teach amateurs to play like amateurs.” If you want to learn this game, go to a pro and get lessons as soon as you take this game up.
@DaveLeeNC Yep….the one piece take away with the shoulder turn. Flat takeaway and let your lower body follow your upper and let it lead the upper to impact. The downswing starts with the knees.
@andrewcay1 One change at a time (you need to be consistent and must practice this, too). But, never say “THIIS IS MY SWING AND THAT IS WHAT I’M STICKING WITH” (provided it is a wild type shot…LOL) If you don’t like your shot, learn what you have to do until you like your shots. But, it is YOUR journey. Many different paths to take into the hole. And by MANY, I mean INFINITE paths. LOL Trust me, I’ve known how to turn a par 3 into a par 5 and till not even been on the green.
@andrewcay1 The best advice I can give to you is SWING HARD! Learn to hit the ball. It might take longer, however, you make small incremental adjustments to everything. From grip to follow through. But, they should be SMALL! Only small changes once you learn what needs changing.
@sk8rdaniel You’re wrists are VERY volatile. They largely dictate your clubface at impact. You have to understand the hitching in and out to execute a good golf swing. It’s probably the most important motion in the swing if you want the power the pros have.
@sk8rdaniel THose who cannot execute a full shoulder swing, simply shorten your swing. 90% of your power should come from 2 feet on both sides of the ball. That is why they say accelerate through the ball. Obvious why that is a tenet.
People need to understand that you don’t need to bring your arms past shoulder height. Let your wrists do the work to parallel. And this is why you need to be VERY realaxed from the top.
That said! This tip is AMAZING! I’ve never heard it put quite like this. But, it is absolutely true! It’s very difficult to understand the mechanics and especially your own mechanics. Because it is all based on feel. You have to be able to understand what your body is doing at all times to execute a good golf swing!
FWIW, you have to combine the two simultaneously. Especially with the driver tee shot. A FLAT takeaway will start your torso and lower body in that swivel and just let the club dictate what your body does. At the top, simply reverse the motion. You have to do this in relaxed fashion. But, in the perfect golf swing, the combination of the two motions completes the pure striking golf swing.
Some people aren’t flexible enough in the shoulders to get a full turn, so don’t force the issue and try to get the club up to the top and pointing to the target if you aren’t flexible.
This guy just explained in 2 minutes what nobody else has been able to tell me in about 1 year….no wonder why it’s been so difficult trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with my swing, I was thinking about it the wrong way!!
the first time I saw this video I thought no way. I am a 16 handicap and just took a lesson for the first time and my instructor was totally about lifting my arms up. the feeling was i was coming over the top because I was swinging so inside, but when we looked at it on video it was perfectly on plane may take some time getting use to but this is definitely correct just make sure to make a full shoulder turn while u do it.
@diffonyahoo That’s good, if you’re athletic enough to pull it off. Here’s a mental image which helps me; FLOUR POWER! imagine that you’re swinging a large, heavy sack of flour and trying to throw it down the line. This forces me to use the whole system as a unit and minimizes the tendency to over-rely on the hands in isolation.

I understand what you are saying but it is important for anyone to not commit the mistake of turning the shoulders too soon , as most amateurs would tend to do , because they want to hit the ball with all their might. The reason I like the hips starting a moment before the shoulders is that it 1. clears the hips out of the way to let the shoulders swing freely and 2. creates a separation momentarily between the hips and the shoulderswhich add to some valuable distance.
